DEC Forest Rangers Rescue Hypothermic Man

When they found him, rangers said the man was unable to walk so they built a fire and gave him dry gear.

WINDHAM, NY — Forest rangers from the Department of Environmental Conservation rescued an exhausted and hypothermic hiker in Greene County.

Authorities said rangers received information about the man around 2:30 p.m. Saturday. He was said to be on the Escarpment Trail near Burnt Knob in the town of Windham.

Rangers responded and the 24-year-old man from Milford, Ostego County, and his hiking companion were found about 1.5 miles from the trailhead around 6:45 p.m.

He was unable to walk, so rangers built a fire and provided him with food, hot drink and dry gear.

More resources were requested in case he was unable to make it out on his own, but his condition improved.

Rangers gave him lighter snowshoes and trekking poles and carried his hiker's pack to help him make it back to the trailhead.

The man declined further medical care and was given a ride home by his family.

Authorities said the incident was over by 8:30 p.m.
