POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A resolution passed by the Dutchess County Legislature to allow hours that liquor stores can be open for business was vetoed by Count Executive Marc Molinaro, who cited concerns that there wasn't enough time allotted for public and business owners' input.

"There were many people, including local liquor stores and municipal leaders, who were unaware this resolution was even being considered and then read about it in the media once it was done," Molinaro said in a prepared statement.

The resolution would have requested that the New York State Liquor Authority change the county's restriction of the retail sale of wine and liquor at retail stores to permit their sale from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, as well as on holidays, the seven days before Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Currently, stores must close at 7 p.m. each day and can only be open for one hour in the morning on holidays.

Molinaro said he did not oppose the change and expects the veto to be overridden.

"There is clearly support for this change but it is important that we provide the opportunity for all voices to be heard," he said.

The resolution reflects a change that would typically require a minimum of two board meetings, with appropriate notice, and a public hearing, Molinaro said.

At his suggestion, Legislature Chairman Gregg Pulver placed the override vote on the May 13 agenda, and the public will have the opportunity to speak before the legislators vote.
