Family Of Graswald's Fiancé Suing For Wrongful Death

The family is seeking unspecified damages.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The family of Vincent Viafore has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in State Supreme Court in Dutchess County against Angelika Graswald. The suit said Graswald is responsible and liable for her fiancé’s death because of negligence, recklessness and carelessness, among other reasons.

The family is seeking unspecified damages, the Poughkeepsie Journal said.

The lawsuit was filed Oct. 27.

Graswald was sentenced Wednesday in Orange County to 1-1/3 to four years in state prison, the maximum sentence allowed.

She pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in July, admitting in court that she caused Viafore’s drowning death in April 2015.

They were kayaking on the Hudson River.

Graswald will likely be out on parole in late December, due to the time she’s already served in jail.

She could be deported after she finishes parole because she is a Latvian citizen with U.S. permanent residence.
