POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Police responded to a fight Monday at Poughkeepsie High School that prompted school officials to issue a hold-in-place order. The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m.

School personnel asked for help from police for a fight that involved numerous students, the Poughkeepsie Journal said.

Poughkeepsie Superintendent Dr. Eric Rosser said there was a verbal confrontation between a few girls that resulted in a physical engagement.

The hold-in-place was issued primarily to keep students in the classroom until the situation could be properly addressed.

"Once it was determined the situation was under control, the hold-in-place was lifted and the school day proceeded as normal," Rosser said.

He said any student found to have violated the district code of conduct will be disciplined accordingly.

"We will work with staff and external partners to provide students with services to address their conflict," Rosser said.

Mediation and crisis intervention techniques were used by the responding officers, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

There were no arrests or injuries to students or staff.
