Homeowner Foiled A Burglary Attempt After Startling Intruder, Cops Said

The 29-year-old suspect in the case was later tied to several other open burglaries in the area, according to Ulster police.

ULSTER, NY — A Hudson Valley homeowner's harrowing experience ended with satisfaction.

On Thursday, Ulster Police Department officers arrested a suspect, after a resident's quick thinking foiled an attempted burglary, cops said.

At 8:24 p.m., police got a complaint from a resident who reported that someone was attempting to make forcible entry into their home. The resident said she called out to the would-be burglar, who fled the area on foot.

A short time later, police spotted a woman matching the description of the suspect, who the homeowner positively identified as the same person who attempted to enter the residence.

Mikayla N. Mellin, 29, of Kingston was arrested. Detectives were also able to link Mellin to several open burglaries in the area.

She was charged with felonies of second-degree burglary, and second-degree attempted burglary. Mellin was remanded to Ulster County Jail, where she will await further court proceedings.
