Legoland Opponents Receive Temporary Restraining Order

Town officials said the town land in question would not alter the plan substantially.

GOSHEN, NY — A group opposed to the proposed Legoland amusement park in the Town of Goshen have been granted a temporary restraining order on the sale of nine acres of town-owned land for the project. Concerned Citizens for the Hudson Valley filed the appeal.

Town officials have said the nine acres in question would not substantially affect the project, recordonline.com said.

Conditional site plan approval was granted by the Goshen Planning board Oct. 19.

FIOS1 News said the restraining order was granted because of a petition from the group demanding a permissive referendum that was found to be invalid.

The group posted a statement on its Stop LegoLand Facebook page that thanked members of the community for their support.

“The fight has just begun,” the statement said. “Amusement parks are prohibited by local law in all of Goshen. This site Legoland chose is an environmental asset with many protections the @legolandny DEIS lied about and ignored.”

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus told FIOS1 News that the planning process for the park is ongoing and that there will be more opportunities for the public to make suggestions and request accommodations.

Merlin Entertainment, Legoland’s parent company, wants to build the $500 million theme park in the town, beginning construction before the end of 2017. Developers would like the park to be open by 2019.

Plans for the park, which will be third Legoland built in the United States, include 50 different rides in eight themed areas.

The new park will be off of Route 17.
