GOSHEN, NY — Lines at the New York Department of Motor Vehicles were long in many locations Monday. It was the first day of New York's new Green Light law, which allows undocumented immigrants to apply for limited drivers licenses.

The limited license requires drivers’ education and insurance.

Mount Kisco-based Neighbors Link has been providing workshops for people seeking to obtain a limited drivers’ license.

"Certainly, we are all safer and stronger when every resident of New York State who needs to drive can do so legally, driving a properly insured vehicle," said Carola Bracco, Executive Director of Neighbors Link. "Westchester County relies on its immigrant workforce to sustain the quality of life that makes it such a desirable place to live. Immigrant consumers are critical to our local economy."

The long line at the DMV office in Goshen, New York was not unexpected. Orange County Clerk Annie Rabbitt had warned the public to expect delays due not only to the expected number of applicants but also the lack of resources provided by the state to implement the law.

"The long wait you may experience is a NYS issue and not an Orange County issue," she pointed out on the County Clerk's webpage.
