Mid-Hudson Library System Joins ReadersFirst

The Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS) Board met on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, and unanimously voted to join ReadersFirst. ReadersFirst is an international coalition of libraries that works to improve how readers access library e-books and digital content by advocating for user-friendly platforms and fair digital lending practices.

As more readers have discovered the convenience and accessibility of e-books and digital audiobooks, libraries across the Mid-Hudson region must invest more in collection development to meet community demand for both print and digital items. Unlike print books, however, digital materials are licensed rather than owned, and those licenses expire after a set period or number of checkouts, requiring libraries to pay again to continue offering the same titles.

“By joining ReadersFirst, the Mid-Hudson Library System is supporting efforts to advocate for more sustainable and equitable digital lending models that help libraries serve their communities effectively,” said Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, Executive Director of the Mid-Hudson Library System, “Readers should have the right to access information and literature in the format they are most comfortable with.”

Those who wish to support library access are encouraged to donate to their local library or to the MHLS eBooks/downloadable Audiobooks fund (https://midhudson.org/donate/) established by MHLS to strengthen library collections and expand access to books and digital materials throughout the MHLS service area.
