Newburgh Man Gets 25 Years For Robbery, Criminal Possession Of Weapon

After failing to appear for sentencing, he was later arrested, and was found with a loaded weapon which could lead to more jail time.

ORANGE COUNTY, NY — A Newburgh man compounded his troubles by not showing up for his sentencing.

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that 22-year-old Ziquan Garfield Jenkins was sentenced in Orange County Court to a total of 25 years in prison, and 5 years post-release supervision after previously pleading guilty to first degree robbery and second degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Jenkins admitted that on September 2, 2023, he and others displayed handguns and forcibly stole money, an iphone, and a gold chain and crucifix from a man on Benkard Ave. in the City of Newburgh. He also admitted that on July 6, 2023, he possessed a loaded handgun on Broadway in the City of Newburgh, which he discharged at another person, who was not injured.

Jenkins was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years post-release supervision for the robbery and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and five years post-release supervision, for the possession of a weapon. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively for a total sentence of 25 years in prison and five years post-release supervision.

In July of this year, an arrest warrant was issued for Jenkins when he failed to appear for sentencing on the robbery and criminal possession pleas.

On July 26, Jenkins was arrested on those warrants and was again alleged to be in possession of a loaded firearm. A Grand Jury charged Jenkins with second degree criminal possession of a weapon having a loaded firearm when he was arrested on the warrants. If convicted of those charges, he could be sentenced to an additional three and half years to fifteen years in prison.

"The community with be safer during the decades that this defendant is incarcerated," said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. "Removing illegally possessed handguns, and those who recklessly use them on our cities’ streets remains a major priority While I fully support the right of law-abiding citizens to legally obtain firearms, those who illegally possess pistols, and particularly those who use those weapons on others will face severe consequences in Orange County. Those who live, work, and visit our cities have the right to do so free of the wanton violence that invariably stems from illegally possessed handguns."

Hoovler thanked the City of Newburgh Police Department for their investigation and the arrests of Jenkins.

The weapons possession case was prosecuted by Executive Assistant District Attorney Leah Canton, and the robbery case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Richard Giordano.
