Pair Caught In Stolen SUV Face Multiple Charges: NYSP

The driver tried to flee but ended up damaging the car he was in and striking the patrol car that was in pursuit, police said.

EAST FISHKILL, NY — Two people are facing multiple charges after a police pursuit in a stolen car on Taconic State Parkway Saturday.

The New York State Police said, around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, troopers patrolling the parkway in the town of Putnam Valley were advised of a possible stolen vehicle headed north.

The 2010 Toyota Rav4 was located and a vehicle and traffic stop was initiated. Justin T. Bumpers, 28, of Brooklyn, was driving, and Jada A. Joseph, 23, of Poughkeepsie, was a passenger.

Bumpers failed to comply with the traffic stop and attempted to flee.

While passing other vehicles on the east shoulder of the parkway, he severely damaged the front right wheel after striking a rock embankment.

Bumpers lost control of the SUV and struck the state police vehicle that was pursuing him.

He fled on foot, police said, but was soon taken into custody. Joseph stayed in the SUV and was taken into custody without further incident.

The investigation found Bumpers and Joseph were in possession of 0.7 grams of crack cocaine and 08 grams of cocaine. With the assistance of Dutchess County Corrections, it was determined that Bumpers had counterfeit United States currency.

Bumpers and Joseph were arraigned in the Town of East Fishkill Court.

Bumpers was charged with first-degree possession of a forged instrument, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, felonies, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and reckless endangerment, misdemeanors.

Joseph was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Bumpers was sent to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail or $200,000 bond. Joseph was released on her own recognizance to return to court Wednesday.
