Pair Stopped On Route 9 Accused Of Illegal Drug Possession

Police said the driver had five suspensions on his license.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A pair of Dutchess County residents were accused of illegal drug possession after a traffic stop on Route 9 in the Town of Poughkeepsie. State police said Derek E. Guzman, 34, of Hyde Park, and Sara M. Gumaer, 33, of Poughkeepsie were charged with fourth- and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, felonies, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Guzman was also charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor.

Police said that, around 2:30 a.m April 10, troopers stopped a 2000 Mercury Marquis on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie for a vehicle and traffic law infraction.

An investigation found they possessed about 7.8 grams of heroin, 0.8 grams of cocaine and 8.6 grams of naloxone, police said.

Guzman, who was the driver, was operating the car with five suspensions on his license.

The pair was arraigned in the Town of Stanford Court and sent to the Dutchess County Jail — Guzman, in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond; Gumaer, in lieu of $8.000 bail or $10,000 bond.

Both were scheduled to appear in the Town of Poughkeepsie Court April 10.
