Police Department Warns About 'International Organized Theft Groups' Targeting Hudson Valley Homes

The burglary rings often conduct surveillance, learning the daily patterns of their victims, and figuring out when they are not home.

TOWN OF NEW WINDSOR, NY — The New Windsor Police Department is warning residents to take precautions to avoid becoming victims to international criminals.

The department said that there have been several recent residential burglaries in the region.

The international theft groups often have members from South America, who travel to the U.S. to take part in organized regional burglary rings. These groups usually target homes in residential neighborhoods, when the residents are not home, focusing on stealing high-end jewelry, watches, designer items, and cash.

They tend to force entry through the back of homes, and the primary bedroom is then "raided and ransacked" while searching for high-value items.

Here are some tips New Windsor police offered to protect yourself:

  • If you see something, say something! These theft groups will often use rental vehicles or vehicles with out of state license plates, canvassing neighborhoods for potential targets.
  • Consider installing surveillance cameras and/or an alarm sysem.
  • Do not leave large amounts of cash in your home.
  • Do not post on social media when you are going away on vacation.
  • Secure valuables and keep windows and doors locked.
