Police Searching For Missing Kayaker In Ulster County

An overturned kayak was found in the Wallkill River, as were some personal belongings.

RIFTON, NY — Police are looking for a man whose overturned kayak was found in the Wallkill River in Rifton in the Town of Esopus near the area of State Route 213. State Police have identified a man who is missing and believed to be the kayaker in question. They are not currently releasing the name of the man.

Around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, Ulster County 911 received a call about an overturned kayak. The initial response consisted of the State Police Highland barracks, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and dive team, Ulster County Hose No. 5, Rifton Fire Department, Esopus Ambulance and Ulster County Department of Emergency Management.

State Police Underwater Recovery Team from Troop F and Troop K responded with an airboat and SONAR equipment.

The search Tuesday lasted until 8 p.m. The URT located and secured the kayak and other personal belongings.

The search resumed Wednesday morning, Feb. 14.

Police said efforts are still underway to locate the missing kayaker.

Also assisting in the search were Rosendale Town Police Department, Tilson Fire Department, New Paltz Fire Department, Esopus Fire Department and Mobile Life Support Services.
