Poughkeepsie To Open City Cooling Center

Other facilities such as the main library will be open due to the expected extreme heat. Plus the city pools will be free to use.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — In advance of the expected heat wave, the City of Poughkeepsie will be opening a cooling center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The location is the Public Safety Building at 505 Main St.

The Adriance Memorial Library, 93 Market St., will also operate a cooling center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m Sunday.

The Salvation Army Poughkeepsie Corps Community Center, 19 Pershing Avenue, will open a cooling center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Both municipal pools — Pulaski Park Pool at 162 Washington St. and Spratt Park Pool at 121 Wilbur Boulevard — will be open for free. Hours of operation are from 1 p.m to 7 p.m. All children must pass a swim test in order to swim in the deep end of the pool.

Mayor Rob Rolison urged city residents to take the extreme heat seriously.

"Temperatures will be well into the 90s and could hit 100 degrees this weekend," he said in a press release. "Keep hydrated and please sue one of the cooling centers if you need them."
