Sam's Point Wildfire Has Consumed 2,000 Acres
Today's rain was not the hoped-for solution.

Fire officlals say the Sam's Point Preserve wildfire has spread over 2,000 acres in Ulster County.
Tuesday's waves of rain have not been enough, said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. "As this final batch moves through in the early afternoon, it looks like we will once again be dry, while the rain has helped, it was not the solution we were looking for."

The fire began Saturday in rugged terrain near a trail. The preserve on the highest point of the Shawangunk Ridge is known for its dwarf pines--which are providing lots of fuel.
Jim Hay, public information officer for the New York State Incident Management Team, told the Times Herald-Record, "there are plenty of hot spots and the rain only gets to the surface. By late Wednesday or early Thursday, we could be looking at the same conditions as when the fire started."
