State Police Warn Public About Recent Car Thefts
Law enforcement has investigated more than 400 stolen vehicle cases in the lower Hudson Valley recently.
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The New York State Police in Troop K is asking for the public's help to curb the recent increase in car thefts in the lower Hudson Valley. The state police and other law enforcement have investigated more than 400 stolen vehicle cases in Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Rockland counties.
Numerous arrests have been made and many of the vehicles have been recovered, often with severe damage.
State police said there is, however, something that car owners can do.

"We ask that you please secure your vehicle properly and remove all keys or key fobs from the vehicle," police said. "Keys or key fobs left inside the vehicle is the most common factor shared amongst these cases."
Many of the cars were stolen from affluent neighborhoods, police said, adding that one shouldn't assume it will not happen in other neighborhoods.

Additionally, police said not to leave valuables in your car. Be sure to close the windows, and when possible, park in well-lit conspicuous areas.
