State Senator Reveals She Has Breast Cancer

Sen. Sue Serino said she underwent a lumpectomy and will undergo radiation treatments.

HYDE PARK, NY — State Sen. Sue Serino announced Sunday that she was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. She underwent a successful lumpectomy June 2 and will undergo radiation treatment five days per week for the next four weeks starting Monday.

"Like many women, I was a person who routinely rescheduled my mammograms, never thinking twice about putting my work or family schedule ahead of my health," Serino, 58, said in a news release posted on her state Senate office website.

"When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I was looking for any excuse to rescheduled this last one, but that nagging voice in my head told me to keep it, and thank God I did," she said.

Serino said she wanted to the opportunity to send a message to any of the state's residents who may have been putting off a health screening for any reason.

"Now is the time," she said. "I urge you to take the time to put your health first and follow through. As I have now learned first-hand, it truly can make all the difference."

The form of breast cancer Serino was diagnosed with was non-invasive. Specifically, it was ductal carcinoma in situ. She said the tumor had begun to spread before it was removed, resulting in the need for radiation treatments.

The Hyde Park resident said she will continue to maintain her public schedule during the radiation treatment and will update the community on her progress.

Serino is a Republican representing the 41st Senate District, which is comprised of parts of Dutchess and Putnam counties.
