Vermont Man Charged with Possessing Heroin, Cocaine

He was arrested after a traffic stop on I-87 in Newburgh.

Newburgh, NY — A Bennington, Vermont, man is in Orange County Jail after being arrested with drugs and drug paraphernalia, police said.

State Police stopped a car on I-87 early Tuesday morning for a traffic violation.

The passenger of the vehicle, James D. Perkins Jr., 36, was found to have cocaine, heroin and drug paraphernalia. police said.

He was taken to and processed at the Newburgh barracks and charged with the following:

  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony.
  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, intent to sell, a felony.
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
  • Second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

Perkins was arraigned in the the Town of Newburgh Court and sent to Orange County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or bond.

The driver of the vehicle was released on an appearance ticket for unlawful possession of marijuana and a traffic violation.
