Volunteer Opportunities Of The Week: Meals On Wheels; Visiting

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week Patch will be highlighting a volunteer opportunity — or two — in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — in perhaps a way you didn't consider before.

This week we are putting the spotlight on a couple of opportunities in the Hudson Valley.

Seniors and people who are homebound appreciate getting meals delivered and at the same time enjoy the company. Meals on Wheels of New Rochelle need drivers to help deliver meals. The volunteers meet at 11 a.m. any day of the week at Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital to pick up pre-packed boxes of meals. Delivery takes about two hours.

Volunteers need to have a valid driver's license and an insurance card when filling out the application.

The Friendly Visitor Service of the Jewish Family Service in Orange County matches volunteers from all over the county with older neighbors in their own community to help with specific needs that help maintain independence. The volunteers provide rides to scheduled medical appointments, help with grocery shopping or provide socialization for homebound older adults through weekly "Friendly Visits."

Volunteering is easy to schedule through the organization's Volunteer Hub. Volunteers are supported by a coordinator and are trained during a comprehensive three-hour session.
