Wallkill Fire Leaves 2 Injured, Displaces 17 Families

Firefighters fought the blaze in the sleet and freezing rain.

WALLKILL, NY — An early morning fire tore through an apartment complex in the Town of Wallkill Monday leaving two people in serious condition and 17 families displaced.

While the fire at 92 Fitzgerald Dr. is still under investigation, authorities are saying initially it looks like an accident, perhaps caused by a burning cigarette, the Times Herald-Record said.

Fire officials said 18 apartments were destroyed, the Daily Freeman reported.

Several departments, including the Silver Lake Fire Department, fought the blaze in the sleet and freezing rain.
