West Point To Honor Florida School Shooting Victim

The military academy said posthumous offers of admissions are rarely given.

WEST POINT, NY — The U.S Military Academy will posthumously honor Peter Wang, the 15-year-old who was killed while wearing his JROTC uniform Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL. Authorities said Wang was shot while holding a door open to allow others to escape.

West Point gave his family a letter of admission to the institution, along with honorarium tokens, the Sun Sentinel said.

In a statement published on West Point’s website, the academy said it sent its deepest condolences to the Wang family and the Florida high school community.

“Peter Wang, an Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, had a lifetime goal to attend USMA and was posthumously offered admission for his heroic action on Feb. 14, 2018. It was an appropriate way for USMA to honor this brave young man. West Point has given posthumous offers of admissions in very rare instances for those candidates or potential candidates whose actions exemplifed the tenets of Duty, Honor and Country.”

Nikolas Jacob Cruz, a former student at the school, was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Police said he confessed that he entered the school armed with an AR-15 and began shooting students.
