June 8 2020

NYC DOT is pleased to share with you the new web version of the Third Edition of the NYC DOT Street Design Manual, the city’s resource for street design standards, guidelines, and policies. The Manual, which is available at www.nycstreetdesign.info, comprehensively updates the guidance of the previous edition, incorporating recent geometric and street furniture treatments, the latest best practices in everything from bike lanes to plant maintenance, and a new chapter addressing programming in the public right-of-way. This edition is the result of years of extensive collaboration across city agencies.

Please note this edition was finalized before the state of emergency due to COVID-19. As city processes adapt in response to the crisis, they may temporarily differ from the guidance provided here. While this is a developing situation, COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of providing high-quality, safe streetscapes for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Moving forward, the treatments and guidance in the Street Design Manual will continue to be an essential part of the city’s toolkit to build streets that support the health and safety of all New Yorkers.

NYC DOT hopes that you will find this resource useful. If you are interested in a print copy, please email streetdesignmanual@dot.nyc.gov noting your name, the office or organization you represent, and the office address to which the Manual should be sent. A NYC DOT team will follow up once employees transition back to the office.
