Say Goodbye To Fifth Avenue Apple Store's Glass Cube, For Now
The Department of Buildings approved a plan to remove the cube during store renovations.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — The huge glass cube that marks the entrance to Apple's Fifth Avenue flagship store will soon be taken down for renovations to the store, according to plans filed with the city Department of Buildings.
The DOB approved plans calling for the "full removal of glass cubical structure at apple store entrance," on Monday, according to department filings. The job is expected to cost $2 million, according to the plans.
Apple's Fifth Avenue flagship temporarily moved out of its East 58th Street location into the nearby General Motors Building — once occupied by FAO Schwarz — to accommodate a renovation that is expected to double the store's size. It can't be easy getting necessary construction materials in and out of the store when the only entrance is encased in a giant glass cube. When asked for comment by other publications, such as Crain's New York Business, Apple resurfaced a press release touting the store renovation, without any mention of the cube.
"We look forward to creating an incredible new Apple Fifth Avenue, where our customers will enjoy new services and experiences in a much larger space," Apple said in a statement.
