ICYMI: Taxpayer Cash Used To Protect Trump In NYC Will Be Paid Back Under Budget Deal

A federal government spending deal allocates millions for local agencies protecting Trump and his family.

NEW YORK, NY — The millions of dollars of tax-payer's cash that's used to keep President Donald Trump and his family safe when they're in the city will be paid back by the federal government.

Leaders from both parties struck a budget deal Sunday that includes $68 million to reimburse the local law enforcement agencies that protect Trump and his family, city officials told Patch.

"We are getting what we are owed," Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday. "That's good news for our city and the hardworking police officers faced with this unprecedented security challenge."

It's unknown what portion of the $68 million reimbursement package will be disbursed to the NYPD and FDNY.

A city hall spokesman told Patch "it's safe to assume" that New York City will get the majority of the reimbursement package because the city's costs are the nation's greatest. City taxpayers are currently dishing out an estimated $150,000 per day for the personal NYPD and FDNY security detail assigned to Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan. Although Trump has moved into the White House, First Lady Melania Trump and 10-year-old Barron Trump have decided to remain in their gilded Trump Tower penthouse.

"We estimate that New York City will spend an average of $127,000 to $146,000 a day for the NYPD and $4.5 million annually for FDNY to protect the First Lady and her son while they reside in Trump Tower after the inauguration," James O'Neill, the head of the NYPD, said in a February letter to Congress.

That's on top of $24 million the city already spent to protect the Trump Tower from Election Day through Inauguration Day while then-President-elect Donald Trump was still living in Midtown, O'Neill said.

When the president visits his wife and child in the future, NYPD security costs during his visits would shoot up to around $308,000 per day, O'Neill said — the same as when he still lived at the Tower. Trump is expected to make a return to New York City on May 4, but might opt to stay at his New Jersey golf club instead of Trump Tower.
