Tannat Wine & Cheese Will Bring Tiny Venue To Inwood, Owners Say

The owners are trying to raise cash for the wine bar through Kickstarter.

INWOOD, NY — A pair of wine connoisseurs is seeking funds to bring what they say will be one of the best –and smallest – places to sample unique vintages in the city. With only about 30 seats, Tannat Wine & Cheese will be a place where "Ingredients are celebrated rather than obscured," according to the Kickstarter page.

William Emery, a chef, author and restaurateur, started the Kickstarter page with hopes of raising $30,000 earlier this month. So far, 42 backers have pledged $4,010. The restaurant is expected to open at 4736 Broadway, in Inwood, in the first week of October.

Focusing on high-quality, organic and local ingredients and an ever-changing menu, Emery and his partner, Sarah, want to bring a specialized restaurant for wine and cheese lovers to the city.

"We're food and wine revolutionaries," he says on the Kickstarter page.

"Through exploring natural wines, ancient techniques of preservation, genuinely local ingredients grown and raised and caught and foraged by real human beings dedicated to the health of the earth, by changing our menu daily, and by sharing our profits with our employees, we are more than a wine bar with small plates. We are a force for good. We are agents of change. And this is just the beginning."

"A profit-sharing program will fairly compensate our workers for their time, energy, and expertise, and our roster of events and sponsorship of community programs will contribute to an already thriving neighborhood," the Kickstarter page said.

Different amounts of financial pledges to the restaurant will return different gifts and benefits. For example, a $35 pledge will guarantee a personalized menu item for your birthday in 2018.

Donations of $1,000 and more all include memberships to the venue's wine club, and a donation of $5,000 gets a dinner for six, alongside two tickets to their soft opening and a handmade postcard.
