A Day of Peace at Rocky Point Middle School

Students use creative skills to share message of peace.

students recently observed an International Day of Peace, sharing their writing and artistic talents to help spread Mahatma Gandhi’s message of love, peace and non-violence.

Art teacher Kristen LaBianca helped students illustrate their newfound knowledge of Gandhi’s teachings and colorful posters and reflective writings were posted in the hallways.

“The staff is very proud of the students’ artwork and reflective writings,” LaBianca said. “Not only did they learn about Gandhi’s teachings, they brought these teachings to life through their art and writing.”

Social Studies classes studied Gandhi's work, and in Grant Connelly’s class, students cut out construction paper doves and inscribed statements on them about how to improve the world.The white doves were placed on the walls of a stairwell for all students to read and reflect upon.

Eighth-grade students Emily Aleci, Kaylee Lalima, Kaitlyn Kennedy, and Deborah Ferrer designed and painted a permanent mural entitled “Peace, Happiness, Love” in the main office foyer to commemorate the school’s participation in the International Day of Peace.
