Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of the victory over the French military at Puebla.

Few in Mexico mark the day but in the United States it has become a celebration of Mexican heritage. Interest in Cinco de Mayo increased during the Chicano movement of the 1940s.

Here is a quick and easy papel picado banner to decorate your home for Cinco de Mayo.

Materials:

  • colorful tissue paper or thin construction paper
  • scissors, punches
  • glue or tape
  • cord or string

Directions:

1. Fold the paper in half, then fold it in half again, and then one more time.

2. Cut designs on either side of the folded paper.

3. Unfold.

4. Fold the top of the paper around a string or cord and paste or tape it down.

5. Hang your banner and enjoy your fiesta!
