Miller Place School District Must Look to the Future

Another budget season is upon us and members of our community still come with their hands out with a list of I wants.

I have to believe that the majority of our community will look at this year's budget with eyes wide open and know we won't be able to afford eveything. There are bills to be paid, and just like our own they have gone up.

Every year we look at what we want and how to get it. Every year we "fix" it for one more season. When are we going to look outside our back door and realize that the problem is bigger than a single school district? In our budget alone, we pay approximately $14 million in unfunded or underfunded mandates that we have never addressed with our legislators. I believe this is the fix we need to focus on, not how much we can squeeze out of people.
