Proposed budget reductions in Miller Place to effect Special Education

To the Miller Place Board of Education, I would like to take this opportunity to share some community concerns regarding proposed budget reductions as it pertains to special education.

At this time the is listed as a school in need of improvement based on its adequate yearly progress standings. After the last round of budget reductions, lost Math Lab as an instructional support.

A new New York based curriculum in being instituted without preparation for the impact it will have on special education students ability to conform to it or anticipate the level of support it will require to have them be successful. To date nearly one-third of Miller Place students receive some type of instructional support, whether IEP or RTI related.

At this point, families are more concerned than ever before about any proposed reductions that would impact students ability to succeed academically. I am hopeful that our concerns are unfounded and that even during these trying financial times the education of our students is a priority.

Thank you,
