The Brookhaven Residential Paper Shredding Event is the perfect example of the type of governmental action that troubles me.
Why does a governing body even consider doing this?
They say it is "free".
It's on a Saturday.
Is it staffed by all unpaid volunteers?
Are they not using any equipment, facility, personnel from the town?
Will there be no extra Public Safety officer added or taken from other duties to handle event?
Governing bodies - local, state, federal are more and more intruding into areas of life that a person should take personal responsibility for.
Why should even one penny of tax dollars be taken from one person to pay for another persons personal responsibly to protect their personal documents?
Could you imagine the shock of those who founded this country seeing things get to a level like this?
I half jokingly ask: How long before they offer "free" wiping service to residents to assist in personal hygiene services?
How long before unproductive / non-self-doing people begin expecting services like this and than demanding it?
How long before your taxes are expected to paid for events like this?
I don't need to feel a sense of community at a "shedding event" or meet and greet politicians who will be there to get name recognition.
Somewhere along the line I'm sure these double speak politicians can cloud your mind and make you believe it makes financial sense to do a "shedding event". But really people, give it a little thought and wake up.
Come on people toughen up! Rip your own stuff up by hand, buy a shredder from Staples, or whatever.
Shun government nannies at all levels of government who even offer up stuff like this.
