DWI Charge After Wrong-Way Crash In Rocky Point: Police

He was driving a 2006 Jeep SUV the wrong way on Route 25A and struck a 2020 Subaru, Suffolk police say.

ROCKY POINT, NY — A Rocky Point man was charged with drunken driving after crashing twice while driving the wrong direction in traffic on Tuesday night, Suffolk police said.

Seventh Precinct officers responded to a 911 call reporting a vehicle driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Route 25A in East Shoreham at about 8:40 p.m., said police, adding that John Madden was driving a 2006 Jeep SUV the wrong way on Route 25A and struck a 2020 Subaru being driven eastbound by Olivia Demmer at about 8:42 p.m.

Madden fled the scene and continued in the wrong lane of travel for about a quarter mile when he stuck a 2013 Chrysler being driven by Heinrich Vanriel on Route 25A, near North Country Road, in Rocky Point at 8:45 p.m., police said.

Demmer, 25, of Sound Beach, was not injured, said police, adding that Vanriel, 43, of Shoreham, was transported to John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson for treatment of "non-life-threatening injuries."

Madden, 49, was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident and is being held overnight at the 7th Precinct for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip, police said.
