Miller Place High Students Visit Stony Brook Hospital
Students get an inside look at the surgical process.
Miller Place High School recently visited Stony Brook University Hospital with Advanced Placement (AP) Biology students learning about medical training and surgical procedures.
The students were able to interact with current medical students, residents and attending physicians to learn more about a future medical career path. Students watched videos of surgeries and learned the different steps in the surgical process.
The Professor of Surgery and Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Dr. Apostoli Tassiopoulos, was able to share his experiences in the medical field with the visiting students and fielded their questions. Following the video demonstration, students visited the Clinical Skills Center (CSC), which doctors and medical students use to improve their technique. Miller Place students were able to use these resources to perform such tasks to virtually conduct surgery and a mannequin to perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR.)
