Student from Miller Place Accepted to Yale Young Global Scholars at Yale University

Miller Place, NY (April 2019)—The Miller Place School District is ecstatic to shine a spotlight on Lauren Barnes, a student who shows immense drive and an eagerness to enrich her life through education. Lauren was recently offered admission to the Frontiers of Science and Technology (FST) session of Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) this July. Held on the grounds of Yale University, this worldwide leadership program provides students with the chance to live in inclusive communities comprised of their peers while they attend lectures and classes that will allow them to broaden their knowledge, deepen their understanding, and inspire creativity and analysis.
“The District aims to broaden the amount of opportunities available to our students, specifically ones that stimulate growth in intellectual and leadership skills,” said Dr. Marianne Cartisano, superintendent of Miller Place School District. “It comes to me as no surprise that Lauren was accepted into the Yale Young Global Scholars program. We are excited to see what Lauren will accomplish through this experience, and we know that she’ll go far with whatever she chooses to do!”
Throughout the week, Lauren will explore innovative developments at the forefront of science and technology to develop a better understanding of underlying scientific principles. The program will teach students to consider challenges or limitations in practical applications and emphasize the importance of evaluating societal impacts. Topics will range from artificial intelligence, gene editing, cyber security, and renewable energy.

Ms. Barnes’ acceptance to the program was an impressive accomplishment as this year’s applicant pool was the largest ever for the Yale Young Global Scholars. The thousands of applicants represented over 120 different countries and all 50 U.S. states. However, Ms. Barnes is not new to leadership programs, she previously attended a two-week program at the Brown Leadership Institute for Global Health at Brown University.
Founded in 2001, the Yale Young Global Scholars program aims to empower future leaders by building a global community and designing interdisciplinary programs that inspire intellectual curiosity and creativity across the board. The program is based on the principles of liberal arts, fostering inclusivity through a diverse community and a commitment to increasing education access. There are three sessions throughout the summer, providing seminars and lectures on an assortment of subjects that include applied science and engineering, literature, philosophy, culture, sustainable development and social entrepreneurship, and biological and biomedical science.
