Miller Place's Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School Commemorates its Summer Reading Program

Miller Place, N.Y. (October 2018)—Miller Place’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently celebrated its summer reading program Reading Rocks, a high-quality summer reading initiative to promote literacy throughout the summer months. While school is not in session, the Miller Place School District looks for innovative ways to continue stimulating its students’ engagement with their studies and provide incentives for students to visit local libraries to engage with books.

This year, more than 125 students who read at least three books and visited a local library three times throughout the summer were invited to celebrate the commemoration of this year’s Reading Rocks. At the celebration, students honed their creativity by drawing and designing vibrantly colored bookmarks at a bookmark station. Students took playful photos in the photo booth and used different clues to participate in a book scavenger hunt, excited to celebrate their summer reading achievements. Students put their minds to the ultimate test by working together to complete a timeline of when events took place or products were released.

Faculty entered each of the students into raffles for a basket of books, a family pass to Finks Farm, free admission to a local bounce house, and a grand prize of a wireless Bluetooth speaker. A total of 150 students were awarded trophies for completing the summer reading initiative and nine students were named winners of the raffles. This year’s grand prize winner, Dylan Lempin, earned himself a Bluetooth speaker through his hard work this past summer. Congratulations to all of the students at Laddie A. Decker on completing Reading Rocks!
