Snow Melt Causes Massive Flooding
Officials say the warmer temperatures led to snow runoff at a nearby sod farm
Brookhaven Town and fire officials were called to Sherwood Drive in the hamlet of East Shoreham. Upon arrival fire department personnel had water gushing down Sherwood Drive to Cooper Street. Rocky Point Chief of Department Bill Lattman immediately requested assistance from neighboring fire departments to respond with pump out equipment.
Heavy equipment from the Town of Brookhaven was also brought in from their highway department. According to one official from the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal Office, one residence was severely damaged. It was estimated that one of the homes had approximately 1-1/2 feet of water in the basement.
Firefighters from Rocky Point, Sound Beach & Ridge Fire Departments assisted residents with sump pumps in an attempt to drain as much water as they could from their homes. Town officials dug a trench to divert the water out onto the street.
