Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. Two fires erupted in the same building at East Second Street and Main Street in downtown Mineola, one on Friday night and then a second one the next evening. The first blaze displaced almost a dozen residents who lived in the second-floor apartments above retail stores including Metro PCS and a discount store. Nassau County Assistant Chief Fire Marshal James Hickman said that around 120 firefighters returned to battle the second blaze on Saturday at 6 p.m., and that they were investigating whether the first fire reignited and caused the second fire. No injuries were reported. (Newsday)
  2. The victim of a single-vehicle crash on the Northern State Parkway in Westbury last Thursday has been identified as Brandon Wilson, a 34-year-old Port Washington police officer. Wilson had served the Port Washington community as an officer for the past five years. (News12 The Bronx)
  3. A $20 million contract to develop a new clock for the U.S. Navy has been awarded to Uniondale-based Frequency Electronics, Inc. The company will develop a mercury ion atomic clock for Naval platforms. Atomic clocks are the most accurate of all clocks and can be used in weaponry. (Garden City Patch)

Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera's drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.

Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
