Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- Long Islanders were still cleaning up from the weekend blizzard on Monday in frigid temperatures. A Garden City resident noted that it was easier to remove the snow while it was still soft on Saturday with a snow blower. Whatever snow that was left on driveways or sidewalks turned to ice, making cleanup a more difficult task later. (CBS New York)
- Two men died in Syosset on Saturday apparently from shoveling snow during the winter storm, according to Nassau County police. A 75-year-old man who was shoveling in front of his house on Barbara Drive at 2:34 p.m was found collapsed. That night, a 53-year-old man was found in front of his Belmont Circle home, lying on his back in the snow with a shovel next to him. Both men were taken to North Shore Syosset Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. (Mineola Patch)
- A 49-year-old man was found lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds in Hempstead Sunday night at the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Sewell Street, according to Nassau County police. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. If you have any information about this incident, please call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous. (Mineola Patch)
From our sponsor:
Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They're chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond "Dry January." We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we've since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.
Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they've extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.
