- A Mineola apartment building fire last week killed three dogs and displaced one resident, according to officials. The Mineola Fire Department responded to a first-floor apartment fire at 133 Lincoln Ave. on Jan. 10 at approximately 8:45 a.m. Mineola Fire Department Chief Andrew Martone said that no other fatalities or injuries were reported. - Three men from Pennsylvania were arrested in Williston Park last week for stealing a catalytic converter from underneath a car in New Hyde Park, according to Nassau County police. The arrest was made during a routine police patrol of the area at 4 a.m. The trio was charged with attempted petit larceny, auto stripping, criminal mischief and possession of burglar tools. Catalytic converters are in high demand from drivers and auto repair shops looking for cheaper parts. (New Hyde Park Patch)
- A new doughnut shop featuring create-your-own-doughnuts is coming to town this weekend: Duck Donuts opens its first Nassau County location in Garden City Park on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 9 a.m. Located at 2425 Jericho Turnpike in the City Park Plaza shopping center, Duck Donuts will be giving every customer a free doughnut this Saturday and Sunday. Patrons can make their own combination doughnuts by selecting from a variety of icings, toppings and drizzles, including such non-traditional flavors as maple icing with bacon. (Garden City Patch)

Highlands Chief of Department Laureano [5900] was immediately on scene and confirmed a fully involved detached garage fire to the rear of a residence on St. Marks Place and a Signal 10 (working fire) was transmitted. Quint 595 was first due and stretched the initial line down the driveway to begin extinguishing the fire. Nassau County Fire Marshal Hazmat was requested to the scene for a propane tank on fire in the structure. With the assistance of crews from Albertson, Port Washington, and Mineola, the main body of fire was knocked down and placed under control in approximately 30 minutes with three lines stretched and placed into operation. Extensive overhaul was conducted by crews on scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation." (Facebook)
