• Wannabe mad scientist sparks fire after experiment 'reacted violently' at Long Island apartment: police (nypost.com) — Mineola residents were evacuated for hours after a late-night chemical experiment in a local apartment allegedly ignited a hallway fire, damaging floors and walls. Police say they found unstable, explosive materials and lab equipment inside, which bomb technicians later detonated safely elsewhere. The tenant faces arson and reckless endangerment charges and has been released with an ankle monitor.
• 78 Long Island high schools named Schools of Distinction, Excellence (newsday.com) — Mineola High School has been named a School of Excellence for balancing strong academics with varsity sports, joining dozens of Long Island schools recognized by the state athletic association. The designation means at least three-quarters of Mineola's varsity teams achieved Scholar-Athlete status, highlighting students' classroom performance as much as their results on the field.
