Andrei Barasch Appointed New Chair of Winthrop’s Dental Medicine Department

Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrei Barasch, DMD, MDSc, to the position of Chairman of Winthrop’s new Department of Dental Medicine. Dr. Barasch has been selected to lead the development of a comprehensive Dental Medicine program at Winthrop, which will feature both clinical care and dental medicine education, as well as research. The program will provide state-of-the-science dental care for in-patients and also on an out-patient basis.

The program will add hospital dentistry to Winthrop’s already rich palette of health care specialties, and will afford oral care to medically complex patients, such as those requiring treatment under general anesthesia or oral surgery, as well as patients with cancer or autoimmune diseases. The program currently functions on a limited basis and is expected to begin accepting patients in mid-2012.

Residents in the new Department of Dental Medicine will be trained in all aspects of modern dentistry, including implants, anesthesia, laser dentistry and digital radiography. Fourth year dental students will be able to apply for residency as early as October 2011.
