Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- A group of politicians gathered on an East Meadow street to voice concern over proposed changes to local zoning laws on Long Island that would allow basement, garage and attic apartments in single-family homes, as well as separate units — a.k.a "granny flats" — to be built on properties. The zoning changes, part of Gov. Kathy Hochul's budget proposal, were called "an attack on suburban way of living" by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Opponents worry about the impact of a larger and denser population in Nassau County affecting traffic, parking and schools. (CBS New York)
- Mineola Middle School students showed their support for the men and women who served our country in their annual Valentine for Veterans project. Students in 5th, 6th and 7th grade volunteered to create special Valentines for veterans, and also donated new clothing and toiletries. (Mineola Patch)
- Temple Tikvah in New Hyde Park will receive $335,000 in relief payments from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after experiencing severe damages and flooding from Hurricane Ida last September. The temple, which serves a tight-knit community in Western Nassau County and Eastern Queens, will now be able to repair nearly $1 million in damages. (The Island Now)
Today in Mineola:
- Take Your Child to the Library Day — Mineola Memorial Library. (10 a.m.)

- Chaminade High School - Mineola: "Students participated in a prayer service today to celebrate the Feast of St. Blaise, patron saint of throats. Tradition holds that while in prison for his faith, Blaise saved the life of a choking child. A sacramental blessing for good health was offered to all students through his intercession." (Facebook)
- Our Lady of Victory School - Floral Park: "Pajamas and Italian ices for Student Appreciation Day, and then Team Jersey Day!" (Facebook)
- St. Aidan School - Williston Park: "'Many Hearts Can Do Great Things!' Yesterday, the St. Aidan School community participated in a dress down day fundraiser to support the 'Students of the Year' campaign to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS)." (Facebook)
- Family & Children's Association - Garden City: "Each week we will be bringing you facts about Black History, and this week's fact involves one of the most famous speeches of all time. Check out this message from one of our DEI Council co-chairs, Alexis Jinks." (Facebook)
