- Nassau County Executive-elect Bruce Blakeman has chosen two people to fill key roles on his team. Arthur Walsh will be be his chief deputy county executive; the Floral Park native is the current general counsel for Nassau Off-Track Betting. Christopher McGrath, a law professor at Hofstra University in Hempstead, will be head of Blakeman's transition team. McGrath is a partner at the Garden City law firm Sullivan Papain Block McGrath Coffinas & Cannavo. (Mineola Patch)
- Opening along with the new USB arena in Elmont on Saturday is the first new LIRR station in 50 years. The Elmont station will facilitate easier travel to New York Islander games at USB Arena, as well as Belmont Park. Riders east of Elmont on the Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches can now take a direct route to the LIRR Elmont station. (abc7NY)
- The Stewart Plaza shopping center at 650 Stewart Ave. in Garden City will be welcoming a new retailer, warehouse home supply store Floor & Décor, while the long-standing Burlington Coat Factory Store will be downsized from 83,000 to 64,000 square feet. Built in 1990, Stewart Plaza will also be renovated, with parking lot upgrades and sign enhancements. (Mineola Patch)
