Harry Katz Carpet One has been a fixture in the local community for over 80 years. The store, located at 450 Jericho Turnpike in Mineola, celebrated its 81st anniversary in 2013 after first opening its doors in 1932. However, the third-generation family flooring business extends its roots over 115 years.
According to current owner, Gary Katz, the current business traces its origins to their great-grandfather Joseph Katz. Katz explained that during the late 1800’s Joseph Katz was a custom push cart salesman and later opened up his own store, North Shore Furniture, on Main Street in 1916. Joseph “worked on a hand shake and a smile,” Katz said, but ultimately had to close North Shore Furniture in the 1930’s because of the Great Depression.
However, Katz’s grandparents, Harry and Yetta, “took the remaining linoleum, rugs and kitchen appliances,” from North Shore Furniture to start Harry Katz Floor Coverings and Appliances. This would ultimately become the Harry Katz Carpet One, that the Mineola and community knows of today.
Harry Katz Carpet One has maintained the connection to the Mineola and to the local community through being involved in the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions Club, and the Kiwanis Club, just to name a few. According to Gary Katz, they “try to do things, to give back.”
