Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. The Nassau County Fire Marshall's Office has determined what caused the two fires at 178 2nd St. in downtown Mineola on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15, one day after the other. The first fire, which displaced about a dozen residents and destroyed the two businesses on the first floor, was deemed to be an accidental electrical fire. The second fire the next day was a rekindling of the first fire encouraged by high winds. (The Island Now)
  2. The mask mandate for New York schools was granted a stay on Monday as the appeal process continues. Gov. Kathy Hochul credited mask wearing with the current decline in COVID-19 cases in our state. However, there is still a large anti-mask contingency on Long Island, and several anti-mask rallies were recently held at Nassau and Suffolk County school districts. (Mineola Patch)
  3. The Mineola real estate market is abuzz with new movement, including five newly listed homes. At the beginning of the market is a 1-bedroom co-op on Clinton Ave., convenient to the Mineola LIRR Station and NYU Langone Hospital, for $299,000. At the high end of the spectrum is a 4-bedroom, updated wide line Cape in the East Williston School District for $775,000. (Mineola Patch)
