Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. The heat is on... and the heat wave in our area is forecasted to continue through the weekend. In response, the Town of North Hempstead is opening two cooling centers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park (New Hyde Park Road and Marcus Avenue), and at the "Yes We Can" Community Center in Westbury (141 Garden St.). Clinton G. Martin Park Pool will also have extended hours through Friday, staying open until 9 p.m. (Patch)
  2. The MTA announced that it may eliminate rush hour express LIRR service from Penn Station to Great Neck, Manhasset, Plandome and Port Washington, and the Nassau County Legislature in Mineola and other officials heatedly insisted that this service remain. The proposed schedule will help with service for the new Grand Central Madison East Side Access project, but riders in these North Hempstead towns are not happy about adding on time to their commute. (WABC-TV)
  3. Fordham University in the Bronx has added 12 new players to its 2022 soccer team, including Joey Giannola from Glen Head as a defender. Giannola played at Mineola's Chaminade High School for four years, helping the team win a state championship in 2021. Locally, he also played for the Long Island Slammers, the number one club soccer team in the U.S., according to GoToSoccer.com. (Soccerwire.com)
