Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are on the rise in Long Island and New York state, with a 32% increase in cases in Nassau and Suffolk from Nov. 12-18. This increase is despite the fact that two-thirds of New Yorkers are vaccinated, according to federal statistics. New York state hospitals reported 2,249 patients with COVID-19 on Friday, a 20% increase from the previous week. (abc7NY)
- Mineola Trustee Dennis Walsh formally resigned from the village board last week to start his new role as councilman for the Town of North Hempstead's 3rd District, representing Mineola, Garden City, Williston Park, Garden City Park and parts of New Hyde Park. Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss appointed Janine Sartori to replace Walsh on the Board of Trustees until March 2022, when Walsh's term was set to expire. Sartori has served on the Village Board of Zoning Appeals for roughly 4 years, as well as the Mineola Athletic Association and the PTA for different schools. (The Island Now)
- A Garden City nurse was honored as a 2021 Woman of Distinction by Assemblyman Edward Ra. Sandra Schneider, Nurse at the Homestead School, was surprised with a citation and celebration Nov. 10 by Ra, who spoke of Schneider's exemplary dedication to her students and the community. - Village of Mineola 2022 Commuter Parking Permit applications are now available and must be renewed by Jan. 1, 2022. Applications can be downloaded from the Village of Mineola website or picked up at Village Hall; they are not mailed to current permit holders. (Village of Mineola)
