Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. CVS Pharmacy, with a busy location here in Mineola, is being sued by the New York State Attorney General for redirecting millions of dollars from hospitals in low-income communities and into CVS's pockets through a new program. A spokesperson for CVS said the allegations are untrue, that the hospitals involved actually received savings, and that ultimately more New York patients in underserved communities were accessing care thanks to CVS. 2. The former site of Toys R Us at 1350 Corporate Drive in Westbury has been leased by electric car brand Tesla, who will open a new service and fulfillment center at the location. The 50,000-square-foot building in Roosevelt Raceway Center has been vacant since Toys R Us closed in 2018. (Long Island Business News)
  3. A new study of half a million British people suggests that regular exercise, doing household chores and socializing may ward off dementia in older folks. Dr. Allison Reiss, an associate professor at NYU Long Island School of Medicine in Mineola, commented on the study that "this is one more piece of the evidence that suggests that exercise is really, really good for your brain." From my notebook:

  • Mineola Truck CO.2 - The Workhorse Company: "On Friday, July 22, Ladder 165 went to Albert Zolezzi Auto Body to get the tip of the ladder painted. As you can see in the photos, the tip of the ladder has taken a beating over our rig's 30 plus years of first line service. Our company and Mineola Volunteer Fire Department - NY would like to thank Albert Zolezzi Auto Body for taking the time, scheduling us and painting the tip. It is no easy task to do this!" (Mineola Truck CO.2 - The Workhorse Company via Facebook)
  • Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW: "For Day 3 of the RWDSU Convention, we heard from New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who encouraged workers to get out and vote for Democratic attorney generals in November! We also had executive director of the AFL-CIO's Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO speak on the importance of providing veterans with union jobs, so they have reliable, stable employment after service." (Local 338 RWDSU/UFCW via Facebook)
  • Family & Children's Association: "RPC's ROOTS Club has had a busy summer! They have been growing vegetables in the Roosevelt Community Garden, and recently got together to make homemade salsa and whole wheat pasta using what they have grown. There was even enough for club members to bring some home with them!" (Family & Children's Association via Facebook)
  • Nassau County Police Department: "You hold the key to prevent theft. Follow the #NCPD9PMRoutine: Remove items from your car. Lock your car. Lock garages, windows and doors of your home. Comment if you completed the routine!" (Nassau County Police Department via Facebook)
  • Island Harvest: "We are hosting a free health fair tomorrow in Deer Park. Come visit us to learn more and help us raise public health awareness across Long Island. #IslandHarvest" (Island Harvest via Facebook)

Alrighty, you're all good for today. I'll see you around!
