DA: Glen Cove Bookkeeper Stole Over $60K From Elderly Woman
The bookkeeper was adding two extra zeros to checks and depositing them into her bank account, the DA reports.

A Glen Cove bookkeeper faces 15 years in prison after she was arrested and arraigned on Tuesday for stealing more than $60,000 from a 92-year-old Kings Point woman, Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas reports.
According to the DA, Deborah Schneider, 52, was altering checks signed by her elderly client and adding the word “hundred” to the amount line and adding two extra zeros to the numerical account. If the elderly woman, who employed Schneider in Nov. 2013, signed a check for $25.00, the DA said Schneider would change it to $2,500.
A total of $60,400 in altered checks were allegedly deposited into Schneider’s bank account.

The elderly woman’s daughter eventually found out money was missing when she asked about her mother’s finances.
Schneider was arrested and charged with second degree grand larceny and nine counts of second degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

“The defendant was a trusted employee but allegedly betrayed that trust and stole more than $60,000 from an elderly woman,” Singas said in a statement. “Seniors are especially vulnerable to economic crimes and I encourage anyone who suspects an elderly person was victimized to contact my office.”
Schneider was held on $20,000 bond or $10,00 cash bail and is due back in court on Thursday.
The DA’s office opened an investigation in August on Schneider’s alleged crime. The case was referred to the District Attorney’s Office by the Nassau County Police Department’s Crimes Against Property Squad.
