Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. A week after Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the progress on the new LIRR terminal for Manhattan's east side, she turned her attention to decaying Penn Station and reported that proposals for a redesign are underway and due July 28. Commuters from Mineola and the rest of Long Island may one day in the not-so-distant future arrive at a terminal that includes more than 18 new entrances, eight acres of public space and protected views of the Empire State Building, as outlined in Hochul's $6-7 billion dollar renovation plan. 2. One of Nassau County's most popular events returns to normal crowd capacity this Saturday for the first time in three years: the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont. Local businesses are making the most of the opportunity, such as the Garden City Hotel, who has traditionally kicked off the Belmont Stakes festivities and is serving up The Belmont Jewel, the official cocktail of the Belmont Stakes. (CBS New York)
  3. As the community pool opens in Mineola in two weeks — and homeowners with their own pools may already be enjoying a dip in the water — the Town of North Hempstead reminds residents to review their pool safety precautions with all of their family (whether using a pool at home, or a town or village facility). You may not know that residents with their own pools are required to put up a 6-foot-high fence around all sides of the pool to separate it from their house. (Patch)

Are you a Mineola resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)
