Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- A drug dealer in Levittown was arrested after an investigation into a fatal overdose, according to Nassau County police. Jeffery Huffman, 39, was renting a garage apartment on Miller Place that detectives searched and found heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine. (Patch)
- May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and doctors want people to know that this deadliest form of skin cancer is treatable when caught early. Prevention is also key, which means using sunscreen and sunglasses whenever you go out in the sun. "You can get melanoma in your eyes. You can get melanoma on the soles of your feet," warned Nassau Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein. (CBS New York)
- Cheryl Lampasona, who is running for re-election to the Mineola's Union Free School District board, said she is committed to "maintaining an enhanced curriculum while keeping taxpayers in mind." The district approved a $100 million budget for 2022-23 with a 0 percent tax levy increase for the second year in a row — unlike many neighboring districts who are seeing a rise in their tax levies.
